Instagram Gets Rid Of Fake Followers In Case You’re Wondering Why Porn Spambots Have Lost Interest In Your Restaurant Pics

CNN reports that Justin Bieber has lost 3.5 million fake Instagram followers as the social photo sharing app conducted a mass purge of spam and other fake accounts.

3 Observations About This Story

1. 3.5 million people is around the population of Toronto, the largest city in the Bieb’s home country. Perhaps this wasn’t a purge, but more of a moment of realization that the Bieb’s hasn’t been representing his country well by allegedly throwing non-Ontario produce at the neighbors.

2. That egg reference in paragraph one is so old, that it could also explain a loss of followers. Even we don’t care to read about the latest Biebs hi-jinx. So why would a former 16-year-old fan who is now aged 21? We figure people care so little about Bieber news, we had to trick you into reading this by not mentioning him in the headline.

3. Kudos to Instagram on getting rid of fake followers! Isn’t accumulating fake followers a major component of rival Twitter’s business model? Or are we really to believe over 60 million real people have real Twitter accounts that can’t wait to hear what Katy Perry has to say? That’s like one in ten people on the planet who speak English. And we’re using “English” very liberally when referring to someone who sings “California Gurls.”
