Someone Breaches Peoples’ Private Information Somewhere

CNN reports that Target is offering a 10% discount for all shoppers at its stores this Saturday and Sunday after 40 million of its customers had their credit and debit card data breached.

3 Questions That Arise From This Story

1. So this discount applies to all shoppers? Even hackers? If so, we hope a dumb hacker asks for 44 million pieces of credit card data for the price of 40 million.

2. How do we know the hacker in the preceding paragraph is dumb? Because a 10% discount of 44 million pieces of credit card data is 4.4 million, not 4 million.

3. “How can I identify hackers at a local department store?” Check the electronics department. Is a woman logged into German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Twitter account? Did she just Tweet a credit card number and expiry date? Is her cart full of delicious Black Forest cake? It’s too tough to call as to whether the woman is a hacker, or Angela Merkel doesn’t know how to pay for cake and electronics at Target.

  1. I’ve always wondered – if someone hacked my account and I had to get a new number, why does the store offer a discount or incentive to shop before I could possibly have the new info?
